Antisemitic and Racist Leaflet Distributed in Mulhouse

An investigation has been opened in Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin) after antisemitic and racist leaflets were distributed in residents’ mailboxes in recent days. The pamphlet, openly Nazi in tone, calls for the “restoration of white racial domination in Europe.”

Several residents expressed shock and indignation after discovering the material. The leaflet, decorated with swastikas, flames, and imagery associated with the Third Reich, urges “white men” to revolt against what it describes as “Jewish media protecting Arab and Black invaders.” It contains explicitly antisemitic and xenophobic language.

The Mulhouse public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation to identify those responsible.

Christiane, 93, told Europe 1 she was stunned when she found the leaflet in her mailbox last Thursday. “I said to myself, what is this horror?” she recalled. On the white sheet of paper, framed by swastikas and an eagle emblem reminiscent of Nazi Germany, she read highly inflammatory text accusing “Jewish media” of lying to protect “invaders.”

At the bottom of the page was a QR code, a link, and an email address leading to what appears to be an antisemitic and conspiratorial blog.

The incident revived painful memories for Christiane. “I knew Jewish people who were deported,” she said. Her granddaughter Héloïse, who lives with her, said she was shocked by the content. “I know that today some people openly express racist views, but I never imagined we would receive something like this in our mailbox,” added Christiane’s daughter, Anne.

The same leaflet had already been distributed in 2023 in several French cities, including Mulhouse, areas in the Jura, Brittany, and near Dijon. At that time, the investigation did not lead to any arrests.

The Mulhouse prosecutor has now opened a new investigation. The city’s mayor strongly condemned what she described as a “disgusting pamphlet,” announced reinforced security around Jewish places of worship, and said that the city’s video surveillance network would be made available to investigators to help identify those responsible.

About Sentinel

SENTINEL is a European project funded by the European Commission and led by the Security and Crisis Centre (SACC by EJC), the security arm of the European Jewish Congress. It brings together the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT), national-level Jewish communities from Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, and Spain, the European Union of Jewish Students, with the support of the Italian Carabinieri and the Police Presidium of the Czech Republic.

The project is designed to strengthen the protection of Jewish places of worship across the European Union through a coordinated set of activities over a three-year period.

SENTINEL will harness AI-enhanced open-source intelligence to monitor and assess current, emerging, and future threats. It will also equip Jewish communities with practical tools, including a mobile security application with a panic button and an interactive map built on real-time incident data.

Training and capacity-building are at the core of the project. These include scenario-based security exercises, crisis management seminars, and both in-person and online training sessions for community security trustees. SENTINEL will also organise EU-wide and local conferences to foster collaboration between Jewish communities, public authorities, and law enforcement agencies.

Complementing these efforts, national and local workshops will promote knowledge-sharing and preparedness, alongside pilot training programmes for law enforcement. A dedicated podcast series will help raise awareness by exploring threat assessments and potential responses.

With its wide-reaching and inclusive approach, SENTINEL will directly benefit to Jewish communities across 23 EU Member States, enhancing resilience, strengthening preparedness, and building long-term cooperation with law enforcement to meet today’s evolving security challenges.
