Statues in the Oosterpark in Amsterdam have been defaced with red paint. This was reported by district administrator in Amsterdam-Oost Jan-Bert Vroege (D66) on Wednesday on X.
In the photo shared by the district administrator, the texts ‘Zionism = Terrorism’ and ‘Israel = Baby Killers’ can be read on a statue in the park. “Painful that such offensive graffiti has been applied so massively in the Oosterpark and on works of art,” Vroege responds. “We have been working hard and hope that everything will be clean again on Thursday.”
Earlier in the day, the Amsterdam city council took a firm stand against the violence in Gaza. “Tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed by Israeli bombardments and other violence,” Mayor Halsema said in a statement. “Including countless children and women, journalists and aid workers. It is not without reason that the director of the NIOD now speaks of genocidal violence.”
“The Dutch government says it is drawing a line in the sand. That is only meaningful if it leads to practical action: the Israeli government is called to order and peace is enforced,” said Halsema. “The destruction of Gaza must stop. The starvation must stop. The murder of Palestinians must stop.” The mayor’s statement received broad support in the city council.Halsema’s words, however, did not go down well with the ambassador of Israel to the Netherlands, Modi Ephraim. “I am deeply shocked by the statement that mayor Femke Halsema made today in the Amsterdam city council,” he writes on X. “Her words not only distort the reality of the current conflict, but also ignore the suffering of the Israeli victims and the context in which this war took place.”
